Dear Reader
If you're reading this letter, then you've probably already read “Little Rock” or are thinking of doing so. In any case, do not worry. In the next few minutes, I will try to answer all your doubts, while shedding some light into its story.
As in life itself, “Little Rock” begins with an ode to what keeps us alive, a fleeting memory kept in the depths of our hearts that takes us back to that happy childhood, oblivious to the bleak world that surrounds us.
In this story, Owen, the main protagonist, finds in the shining stars of night the precious memory of his mother, which he will treasure throughout the entire novel, and help him fight his inner demons.
On the other hand, there can't be light without darkness, and that is where the gloomy Kelpie comes into action, reminding the audience of the invisible dangers that constantly lie in the shadows. Death as an indispensable part of life is another element present in “Little Rock” (since one cannot be without the other), that will accompany our protagonist through the story reminding us of the preciousness of life. Like Owen, at the age of 16 I also suddenly lost one of my parents. That dark period in my life proved to be a turning point. Facing death will make Owens' world fall apart, but the unwavering love for his family and friends will help him overcome all obstacles in his way.
Little Rock constantly challenges the reader through the eyes of his young protagonist, for the true meaning of life. And what does it mean to be alive? To be alive means to love, to dream , to suffer, to challenge the world when necessary, for no one can truly say that they have fully lived, if they have never loved before.
As with other stories, “Little Rock” draws from my personal experiences. Although I won't go into details, I can confirm some scenes touch base with reality more viscerally than it may appear at first glimpse. Owen will learn from his own experiences, rediscovering those magical moments which touch us all; like that first kiss that took our breath away or a forbidden love.
Violence and exuberance are other elements presented within the human condition that the story explores throughout the book, reminding us of the double standards and the importance of standing up against those who suffer or endure social injustice. The moment has now arrived for me to say goodbye. As in life, nothing but true love lasts forever. Owen and his adventures await you to be discovered inside “Little Rock”...
